For one night only a stellar lineup of Comedy Superstars and Australia’s hottest new talent will make this a memorable night at The Basement!
First: the pub. It used to have another name, but now it’s The Local Taphouse and it offers an extensive range of boutique beers (including a tasting paddle for the dedicated) and a funky menu of snacks and full meals. (There is another The Local Taphouse pub in St Kilda which hosts Melbourne’s longest-running independent comedy room under the name Cooper’s Local Laughs, and this Local Laughs comedy room is a spin-off from that.) The ticket price for the show includes two half-price Coopers beers – happy days.
To finish off the festival I had a marathon session with three very different and each very enjoyable shows.
The Comedy Store EQ prides itself on always having top talent every week, and during the SCF they’ve outdone themselves in scheduling international attractions. The first week headlines the droll one-liner machine that is the UK’s John Moloney, France’s premier misanthropist and lover Marcel Lucont, and local flavour Jacques Barrett, and promises secret special ‘festival’ guests each night. This was one of the most satisfying showcases I’ve seen for a long time, largely due to the disciplined craft of each performer on the bill.
By now many of you will have already had your workplace’s festive night out, and maybe (just maybe) it wasn’t that crash hot watching the office clown do the same routine as for the last five years. So why not go out for a night that you’ll really enjoy, with professional comic entertainers?
Ah, the US election threw my writing schedule totally out of whack! Apologies for the delays. Acts reviewed: Axis of Awesome, Sugar Sammy, Harley Breen, Jacques Barrett, Diverse Theatresports(R) Players (Cranston Cup) Venues: Marble Bar, Comedy Store, Belvoir Street Theatre
