Dayne Rathbone, a 27 year old computer programming teacher currently living in Melbourne but who cut his comedy teeth in Canberra, has taken out the Raw Comedy trophy in his second year of competing. The success of his deadpan oddities, shifting between bizarre anecdotes to awful poetry and absurd speculations, is a big change from last year when he didn’t get beyond the first round of heats. Later this year he will travel to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as part of his prize, to compete in their new-talent competition So You Think You’re Funny.

As always for the festival gala gig that is the national RAW finals, a full house at Melbourne’s Town Hall watched the 12 finalists strut their stuff. Bantermeisters keeping the proceedings on track this year were former RAW finalists Tom Ballard and Hannah Gadsby. Runners-up were Tom Gaynor (South Australia) and Khaled Khalafalla (Victoria).

Judges for this year’s final were Susan Provan (MICF director), Karen Koren (Gilded Balloon, Edinburgh), Dave Thornton (comedian), Steve Bennett (editor Chortle.co.uk) and Dom Romeo, (broadcaster, writer, producer). The show will be broadcast on ABC in the not too distant future.

Congratulations, Dayne!

Great write-up, I love Dayne Rathbone’s comedy! Very excited about his new web series Dayne’s World with his brother Clyde Rathbone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct5FFfPBHxU
