A packed Marrickville Town Hall audience nursed their aching ribs (courtesy of the 15 feisty contestants, special guests MANCHOIR and the wildly wisecracking MC Lindsay Webb) and gave a final rousing cheer for this year’s winner of Comedy on the Rox‘s annual new comedians competition, Quest for the Best. A thoroughly entertained crowd left happily while Nikki held on tightly to the oversized first prize cheque for $5000 and accepted the congratulations of her family, friends and fellow comedians.
- Comedy on the Rox will return to the Roxbury Hotel with Sydney’s comedy rumpus room from February 2nd with heats for the 2011 Quest for the Best.
- Lindsay Webb is currently showcasing his 1-hour show Pundamonium on Wednesday nights at Brisbane’s Sit Down Comedy Club before touring it to comedy festivals next year.
- MANCHOIR get together to sing sublimely funny a capella in front of people quite often. Man Up!
A slightly dazed but very happy Nikki said the prize money is a most welcome early Xmas present since now her family can expect a little bit more than the usual IOUs, and that she is looking forward to what next year might bring as she pursues her comedy career. She has only stood up about 10 times in total so far, but she’s already had a go in Raw Comedy and a few open mic spots around town, so she’s keen to develop her craft.
Quest founder Kathryn Bendall was extremely happy with the crowd’s reaction to the quality of the performances, and thrilled with the progress made over the months of the contest by the new comedians. Watch out for finalists Sacha Marx, The Stevenson Experience, Tim Reuben, Ironica, Sean Woodland, Mark Humphries, Jack Wright, Tim McIntyre, Dylan Holland, Gray Bright, Tom Cashman, Nic Newling, Tom Hazledine and Ryan Black as they take their comedy sets around the traps. The Bendall team will be enjoying a break for a couple of months now until they return with next year’s contest.
