Have you got what it takes to make Australia laugh?

Then polish up your best routines and send them in to Auntie! Entries opened Thursday May 8th and close Friday May 30th, so get your skates on. You don’t have to be in the industry already, the opportunity is open to all.

The Comedy Hour is a new, weekly radio comedy series that will air later this year, and ABC Local Radio and ABC TV are giving aspiring comedy writers around Australia the chance to be on the radio – and maybe even on TV.

The idea isn’t new. Many successful British TV comedies started out this way – Little Britain, League of Gentleman, and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, to name a few. But it does represent a new opportunity in Australia. The project is open to both experienced comedy professionals and those who want to be. We hope that this venture not only produces original and innovative comedy, but provides a much-needed training ground for anyone looking for a foothold into the industry.

The Comedy Hour will be a ten-episode weekly program starting later this year, broadcast on ABC Local Radio stations. It’ll be great entertainment, as well as an opportunity for new comedy writers to get their work out there. There’ll be a focus on sketch comedy and gags, but half of the show will be set aside for a brand new format, be it mockumentary, narrative comedy, comedy essay, comedy quiz show or, er…something completely new. No joke is too weird, no sketch too odd – send us your entry and your material could soon be zooming directly into the ears and brain stems of a captive radio audience.

We know how hard it is to get a start in this industry. Now ABC Local Radio and ABC TV are giving comedy writers around Australia the opportunity to get a foot in the door. If you’ve been squirrelled away in your room secretly writing jokes, sketches or other amusing stuff, now’s your chance to shine.

All you need to do is send us a CD of your material and a bit about yourself …
